TWINSBURG GARDEN CLUB’S FIRST MEETING OF 2016
The Twinsburg Garden Club welcomes Hanna Rhoades, owner of one of the largest gardening websites: www.gardeningknowhow.com. on the internet, who will speak at its next meeting on Thursday, February 11. The meeting will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 10285 Ravenna Road. The Club’s business meeting begins at 6:30 p.m., refreshments are next and Rhoades’ program follows at 7:45 p.m.
This gardening guru’s topic is fun and titled “Guerrilla Gardening!” It is basically the practice of greening up and beautifying abandoned spaces, with or without permission of the owners (hence the guerrilla part). Rhoades said there are all sorts of levels that one can pursue from a “seed bomb” (a seed packed bomb one can toss in a space to encourage flowers to grow) to a full-fledged garden. Her presentation is an introduction to the movement, pros and cons of doing it and tips and ideas for organizing a project.
One example she will talk about is a small guerrilla garden just a block from her home, which a local woman maintains in a small city owned patch in front of a sewer access. Other examples Rhoades has experience in range from planting flowers in front of abandoned storefronts to weeding overgrown flower beds in front of foreclosed homes.
New members and guests are welcome! Twinsburg Garden Club is open to anyone in Twinsburg and surrounding communities who enjoys gardening and nature and has an interest in expanding their knowledge. Monthly meetings feature topics on perennials, vegetables, landscaping, hands on projects, and more. Field trips take us to public gardens and nature areas.
